This Grimani family chapel was built under Giovanni Grimani Patriarch of Aquileia who is buried here. The painting is said to be by Federico Zuccaro, but it appears to have been damaged. The bronze statues of 'Justice' and 'Temperance' are by Tiziano Aspetti.
Tiziano Aspetti b. Padua ca. 1559 - d. Pisa 1606 Tiziano was born in Padua into a family of bronze-casters, where he learned the family trade. Then he studied sculpture with Girolamo Campagna, who was the leading sculptor in Venice in the last quarter of the 16th Century. The two sculptors collaborated, and Aspetti's career developed independently. His works can be found in Padua, Venice and Tuscany. He worked the greatest part of his career for the church official Giovanni Grimani, restoring Grimani's antiquities and making original works for his patron's home. He became the most sought-after sculptor in Venice at the end of the 16th century and was particularly gifted in working with bronze. Federico Zuccaro b. Sant' Angelo in Vado 1540/42 - d. Ancona 1609 Federico was the son and brother of a painter. His brother Taddeo invited Federico to Rome to work with him on commissions there. Federico bristled when Taddeo retouched his paintings, yet by age 18, Federico was working at the Vatican, including the Sala Regia and the Belvedere Palace. There was always rivalry between the brothers, yet they collaborated often. Together they developed a classicizing style of art that was highly influential in the latter part of the 16th Century.
