San Stae's facade was designed by Domenico Rossi after 12 different submissions. The overall design is classical Palladian, but the figures that decorate it, especially over the door, are of an extravagant style that looks more like Baroque churches in Rome. Doge Alvise Mocenigo II gave 20,000 ducats for the façade's construction. Mocenigo ruled from 1701 to 1709. He is known mostly for keeping Venice out of the war between France and the rest of Europe over the succession to the Spanish throne. He is buried in a modest grave inside.
