Tomb of Caterina Corner by Bernardo Contino

Caterina Corner was the Queen of Cyprus. The center plaque commemorates Caterina Corner giving the island of Cyprus to Doge Agostino Barbarigo in 1489. The Tomb was made by Bernardo Contino from 1580-1584 and in style it matches the other Corner tomb across from it. Caterina is one of two women memorialized in San Salvador.

Catarina Corner at age 14 was married by proxy in the Doges' Palace to James of Lusignan King of Cyprus. It was the Venetian Senate that wanted this marriage as the Senate coveted Cyprus. A year later King James died suddenly at age 33 leaving a pregnant Caterina. There were rumors he had been poisoned—not uncommon at the time –both rumors of and actual poisoning. Pietro Mocenigo was dispatched to Cyprus to protect Catarina and to watch over Venice's interests. The local nobility resented Venice's influence on Cyrpus. After Mocenigo left with his fleet there was a coup of sorts and Andrea Corner, Caterina's uncle, and Marco Bembo, her cousin, were murdered their bodies being thrown into the moat beneath Caterina's window. Mocenigo returned and had the leaders of the coup hung.

The Venetian Senate sent two patricians who assumed all power from Caterina and ruled in her name. She was a virtual prisoner in the palace. Finally after much intrigue the Venetian Senate ordered Caterina back to Venice. The center plaque commemorates Caterina Corner giving the island of Cyprus to Doge Agostino Barbarigo in 1489. Caterina lived out her days in Asolo, a small hill town which was given to her by the Venetian Senate. She reigned at the center of a powerless court. At the end of her life she returned to Venice and died there at age 56 in 1510. Treated rather shabbily in her lifetime by Venice, her memorial is an attempt to right historic wrongs.
