San Sebastiano - Venice, Italy
Paolo Veronese Bust

This bust of Paolo Veronese is by Matteo Carnero. In his day, Veronese was called by the Prior of San Sebastiano 'a fellow townsman and protector.' Considering that he worked on and off over 40 years on the paintings in the church, it is only fitting that he was buried here.

Matteo Carmero
b. Trento 1592 - d. ?
Carmero was an architect and sculptor. He designed the altar of St. Francis at the Basilica of Il Santo, in Padua in 1648. In Venice, he may have been the designer of the high altar at Giovanni e Paolo. Carmero made a bust for the grave of Veronese in San Sebastian. He designed the monument to Doge Francesco Erizzo in San Martino.
