San Simeone Profeta - Venice, Italy
San Simeone Profeta exterior

The facade is 19th Century although it is thought San Simeone Profeta, or San Simeone Grande, was built in the 10th Century. In the 18th Century the city of Venice sanitation department made the church install a new floor because of the fear of the plague. In 1630 many plague victims had been buried underneath the original floor. The plague was so frightening that it provoked fear one hundred years after it had ended. The little square in front of it is one of the only squares to overlook the Grand Canal. A few doors up is San Simeone Piccolo, a much larger church that was built much later.
