Pasquale Cicogna was the Doge of Venice from 1585 to 1595. He supported Henry of Navarre in his claim to the French throne. The Doge convinced Pope Sixtus V to support Henry in exchange for his conversion to Catholicism. In a break with tradition Cicogna scattered silver coins, as opposed to gold ducats, to the crowd during his coronation procession. The coins became known as the cicognini. Perhaps his most lasting achievement was to have the Rialto Bridge rebuilt in marble based on a model by Antonio del Ponte. (It had been wood.) After Cicogna died of a fever in 1595 a memorial was in scribed on the bridge to him. He was also involved in the redesign of the Piazza San Marco. The tomb was designed by Gerolamo Campagna.
