The Greek trading community had to obtain permission from the Doge to build San Giorgio dei Greci and its attached School. It was the only Greek Orthodox church in Venice. Designed by Sante Lombardo, the building was begun in 1539. It was consecrated in 1561 under the direction of Giannantonio Chiona. The cupola was added in 1571. The church is seen here from across the canal called the Rio dei Greci.
Sante Lombardo b. Venice 1504 - d. ? Sante was one of the famous Solari family of sculptors and builders who came from Lombardy; for that reason, the last name Lombardo is how they are popularly known. Sante was the son of the sculptor Tullio Lombardo. Sante was hired in 1524 to replace Bartolomeo Bon on the building project for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco; by 1526 he had left the project because of disagreements with the members of the brotherhood. He designed the church of San Giorgio dei Greci in 1539, and it was finished by another architect and consecrated in 1561. He may have been involved in the design of the Palazzo Malipiero Trevisan on the Campo Santa Maria Formosa.
