The brotherhood that sponsored the erection of this church was composed of Dalmatian members from the coastal areas of the Adriatic across from Italy (and south east of Venice). This area came under Venetian rule in the early 15th Century. The brotherhood dedicated their building to two patron saints, George and Tryphon. A relic of George was obtained for this brotherhood's church. The church is popularly known as the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavone; Brotherhood of St. George of the Slavs.
