San Giacomo di Rialto - Venice, Italy
Exterior - Campo di Rialto design by Scarpagnino

San Giacomo di Rialto stands in the middle of one of the oldest public markets in the world. It is just west of and off the Rialto Bridge in the center of Venetian commerce. The surrounding buildings on Campo di Rialto on the left and right were formerly the residences for those in charge of navigation, trade, supplies, and other such public offices. The present buildings were built to a design by Scarpagnino after a fire in 1514 destroyed all but the church. Even Vasari praised the design of the campo which facilitated trade for the throngs of merchants who came from all over the world to buy and sell. San Giacomo itself dates back to the founding of the Rialto Market in 1097.
