Oratorio dei Crociferi - Venice, Italy
Doge Pasquale Cignoga

The painting depicts: Doge Pasquale Cignoga in his Ducal robes visits the Monastery and Church on Assumption Day, received by friars of the order the apostolic Nuncio and several pious women. That the people used as models were real and known and sometimes even common makes this a somewhat unusual history painting for its day. But that was Venice both haughty and egalitarian at he same time…sometimes. If you 'zoom' this photo you will see that the entrance doorway is unchanged from when the painting was made.
