To the Left is a statue of St. Margaret by Marchio Barthel. On the right is a statue of St. Jerome by Juste Le Court. St.Jerome was known for preaching against the monastic life and the veneration of saints and relics. He was a radical in his day. The main altar is in the distant center. The lead roof over the altar was commissioned by Andrea Loredan who is buried here. He defended the Venetian Republic against both the Turks and the Spaniards during his career; he was killed in cold blood by the Spanish as they tried to attack Venice in 1513 from the mainland. The Baroque altar consists of statues of 'Saint Benedict,' the 'Archangel Michael' and 'Saint Romualdo'. The sculptures are by Paolo Callalo.
Paolo Callalo Active in Venice from 1709 - ? Callalo was one of the sculpture-protagonists in the 18th Century school of Juste le Court (q.v.), the influential Flemish sculptor who worked in Venice and died c. 1679. A group of collaborators carried on the work of the Court workshops: Orazio Marinali, Callalo, Arrigo Meyring, and Giuseppe Torretti. These sculptors were both native and foreign born (from northern Europe), and seemed to flourish working together on commissions, though each undertook independent ones, too. Of Callalo we know neither birth or death dates.
