The statues to either side of St. Alvise are statues of St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony. They are believed to be by Girolama Campagna.
Girolamo Campagna b. 1552 - d. 1623/25 Though he was perhaps not the most inspired sculptor of his time, Campagna is one of those who forms a backbone of sculptural production in Venice and environs. He trained with Jacopo Sansovino and Danese Cattaneo. He worked with the latter on the splendid Loredan monument in Giovanni e Paolo. He worked in Padua on at least two occasions, once taking over a commission interrupted by Sansovino's death, where his 'St. Anthony Raising a Man from the Dead' is considered his finest work. In Venice's Santa Maria dei Miracoli, he made the statues of St. Francis and St. Clare holding the ostensorium. At Venice's Arsenale, Campagna's 'St. Giustina' is over the door. It celebrates Venice's triumph at the battle of Lepanto. He also carved the bas-relief figures of the Virgin, the Archangel Gabriel, and the patron saints of Venice on the Rialto Bridge. His impressive bronze group of 'Christ as Salvador Mundi Supported by the Evangelists' is on the main altar of San Giorgio Maggiore.
