The tree represents life. This side represents civilization under tyrannical rule. The American Indian, larger than the buffalo, looks like he represents early bodybuilding. Above, the seal of the State of New Jersey contains three plows. It is hard to think now of New Jersey, the most developed of the 50 States, as once being represented as an agricultural state. To the New Jersey's left is the seal of South Carolina. Rhode Island, with the anchor, is on its right. Anthony DeFrancisci made the bronze sculpture.
Anthony DeFrancisci (b. 1887 Italy – d. 1964) immigrated to America, where he studied at the Art Students League, the Cooper Union Art School, and the National Academy of Design. He was a member of the National Academy, Rockport Art Association, and the Audubon Artists. He exhibited from 1910 to the 1930s; his commissions included sculptures for the Allied Artists of America Memorial (Union Square, NY); Eli Lilly (IN); Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY); and the Museum of the French Mint (Paris). DeFrancisci designed the Peace Dollar, minted from 1921 to 1935 to commemorate the end of World War I. His wife, Teresa Cafarelli DeFrancisci, was the model for the face of Liberty on the coin. He also designed the 50th anniversary medal for Ford Motor Company, U.S. Veteran's WWII discharge button and the U.S. silver dollar.
