Arched entrance - Medusa

Lion heads guard the top sides of the arched entrance. A head of Medusa hangs over the top of the arch. A visitor was entering hallowed ground when they entered the library. Medusa was one of each of three sisters with snakes for hair, who had the power to turn anyone who looked at them to stone.

Medusa
(Greek Mythology)
was the only mortal one of the three Gorgons. She had snakes in her hair. Medusa had the power to turn anyone who looked at her to stone. Perseus beheld Medusa on a gold shield so he would not have to look at her. He beheaded her.
