We have finished writing el Escorial, Spain and when the sound files are recorded we will add it to the site
Philip II and Family. Depicted praying are: King Philip II and his wives (hidden behind him his wife Isabella of Valois), his wife Maria of Portugal – the mother of Prince Charles who is the male figure (rear), and Ana of Austria.
The figures are by Pompeo Leoni. They were made between 1592 and 1600.
The small room which Philip II occupied during the latter part of his life and in which he died adjoins the choir of the church. Through an opening in the wall he could see the celebration of the Mass when ill.

The Valley of he Fallen 35 miles outside of Madrid is both Franco’s tomb and a memorial to the Spanish Civil War dead. It is a haunting place and quite controversial in Spain. We will add the site soon.
